Gold Crest volunteers take to bluebirding
What does the Bluebirds Across Nebraska and Gold Crest
Retirement Center of Adams have in common?
-
There is always a need for more bluebird houses to be made
and a need for Volunteers to make them.
-
The men at Gold Crest Retirement Center needed a winter
project, have the time and the Volunteers to accomplish a project.
The
two got together and the result was happiness for both. Steve Eno of Raymond
delivered a pattern and a supply of lumber to Gold Crest Retirement Center.
Volunteer Glenn Hestermann of Adams, who had been an employee of Gold Crest,
and had recently retired, needed something to occupy his time this winter.
He spent many hours in his basement cutting wood and compiling kits so the
men of the facility could use power tools to finish the houses.
Activity
Director, Janet Trout, thought the project could keep the men busy for about
three weeks. Instead, they were so excited about the project, they had 24
houses done in 3 consecutive days. “They just wanted to finish,” she states.
“We couldn’t have done it without Glenn and another volunteer, Don
McPherson. They had so much patience with us and the men felt very
productive.
Just
because one lives in a nursing home, doesn’t mean one doesn’t have something
to contribute to mankind. We’ll do it again. It was a great project. We
appreciated the opportunity to be helpful for a good cause.
Now the next step will be to learn more about Bluebirds and
attract them at our facility. We do have time to watch birds and enjoy their
beauty. Increasing the Bluebird population in our area will be exciting.”
