When Trix
Dorenbach moved into Lincoln from her rural home, she was afraid
she’d have to give up the joy of having bluebirds, but that didn’t
stop her from putting a box in her urban backyard, thinking she
might get lucky and attract some chickadees. Although it took a few
years and a couple of disappointing nesting attempts Trix was
thrilled with her success this year. As she very well should be.
These bluebird were fledged from a box located in a neighborhood
inside the City of Lincoln. The wide open spaces of Holmes Lake Park
may be just across the street, but these birds have “moved in” to an
area not usually recognized as “bluebird habitat.”
It is very exciting and encouraging to have
bluebirds nesting in a large city such as Lincoln. Other large
cities such as Minneapolis, Nashville and Los Angeles have very
successful bluebird trails right in the heart of the city. It would
be a great accomplishment to call Lincoln their home.
Congratulations Trix!
From Trix:
I’m sending a couple of pictures of my “baby” bluebirds. They are
coming to eat mealworms at my deck now. I have only seen three at a
time and I thought five fledged – although I didn’t see this happen.
There were five eggs and the nest was too crowded to count the
babies.
I have two eggs as of now in the same box again. I
am enjoying all of it and have my neighbors enthused also. Might be
“going broke” buying mealworms, but it’s fun!
