Great Platte River Road Archway

This monument, spanning Interstate 80, is the only tourist attraction in the U.S. built over an interstate highway. The 1,500-ton, 308-foot-long span welcomes hundreds of visitors each day. Anchored by 8-story high towers at each end, the museum looks like a giant covered bridge. Its collection tells the story of the Great Platte River Road. The Oregon, Mormon and California Trails; Pony Express; transcontinental railroad and telegraph, as well as the interstate highway system, have traversed this historic route. Visitors wear earphones and board the longest escalator in Nebraska that seemingly ends in the rear of a covered wagon. Visitors move through chronological exhibits as an announcer guides them through the tour. Exhibits include wagon trains at Fort Kearney, a buffalo stampede, Pony Express rider exchanges, Model T's stuck in muddy ruts, a classic drive-in theater and early days on the Lincoln Highway, the first transcontinental highway in the U.S.
