Waterfowl Viewing
     
 

March is the peak month for waterfowl viewing. Large numbers of white-fronted geese arrive, and large wetlands, such as Funk and Harvard WPAs, might have more than one-half million ducks and geese. Pintail courtship flights and whirlwinds of snow geese are common. An alert observer might see as many as 20 species of waterfowl in a single day.

  • More than 10 million waterfowl stop in the rainwater basin each year.
  • A half Million sandhill cranes descend on the Platte River valley between February and March.
  • 7 to 9 million ducks stop in the rain water basin each year.
  • 3 to 5 million geese stop in the rain water basin each year.
  • 257 species of birds have been observed on the rain water basin, including four threatened or endangered species.
  • 84 publicly owned rainwater basin wetlands totaling 28600 acres.
  • Other wildlife include Whitetail deer, coyotes, red fox, muskrats, beaver and prairie dogs.
